Interpret Your Information

Interpret the information you have organized to make your own learning connections.

Analyze your outline or map for relationships and gaps.

• Relationships
• Do any patterns emerge from the supporting ideas and details or examples? If so, do you need to change the sequence of your outline or map?
• Is the topic covered from multiple perspectives?
• Gaps
  • Does each topic have enough supporting ideas?
  • Does each supporting idea have enough details or examples?
  • If not, do more research or determine if the aspect is necessary to include at all.
  • Review your essential and focus questions. Does the information you found fully answer them?

Synthesize the information to create your own ideas about the topic.

• Draw conclusions based on the information. That means responding with your own thoughts, interpretations, or arguments. Include this in your outline or concept map.
• Be sure to utilize the variety of helpful worksheets in the Resources box on the right.
• Begin to think about your introduction and conclusion, and add those notes to your outline or concept map.
